Which Road Roller Fits the Job?
A road roller compacts soil, aggregate base and asphalt with static weight, drum vibration or kneading tyres. The right type depends on the material and the layer you are building.
Single drum vibratory road roller
8–18 t ride-on, 330 kg walk-behind. A smooth steel drum at the front and driven tyres at the rear. High amplitude and centrifugal force drive compaction deep into soil, sand, gravel and rock fill for road bases, embankments, dams and airport foundations.
Tandem double drum road roller
0.56–14 t. Two vibrating steel drums leave an even surface on asphalt and thin base layers. Walk-behind and 1–3 t ride-on tandems work on paths, trenches and patch repairs; heavier tandems finish highway asphalt.
Pneumatic tyre road roller
10–30 t with ballast. Rubber tyres knead and seal asphalt wearing courses and chip seals. Adding ballast raises the operating mass, so one machine covers both light and heavy passes.
How to choose a road roller
- Soil, sand and rock fill: a 12–18 t single drum vibratory road roller with high amplitude.
- Asphalt base and wearing course: a tandem drum roller for breakdown and finish passes, then a pneumatic tyre roller to seal.
- Trenches, sidewalks and small patches: a walk-behind or 1–3 t ride-on tandem roller.

Which road roller is best for asphalt?
Tandem double drum rollers make the breakdown and finish passes on asphalt, and a pneumatic tyre roller seals the surface. For soil and aggregate base, choose a single drum vibratory road roller.
Which engines are fitted to LICH road rollers?
Most ride-on single drum models use the Cummins 6BT5.9 and the 8 t models the Cummins 4BT3.9. The 18 t LCS718H uses a 140 kW WP6G190 engine and the LTC203 a Changchai ZN390B. Each product page lists the engine and rated power.
What do you need for a road roller quotation?
